Roberto Fernández Retamar was a Cuban poet, essayist, literary critic, cultural and political activist . . He was a Doctor of Philosophy and Professor Emeritus at the University of Havana . He was also the President of Casa de las Américas from 1986 until his death Among his most well-known essays are “Calibán”, “Nuestra América y Occidente” and “Contra la Leyenda Negra”
