José Agustín Caballero

Father Agustín, as he is known, is one of the theorists of the Cuban reformist Enlightenment of the late 18th century. Professor of Félix Varela, he represents a frontier thought between scholasticism, Enlightenment and revolution. The novel idea of a Cuban philosophy that he defines as "elective" is due to him. He is also, along with Francisco de Arango y Parreño, one of the pioneers in exposing the limitations of slavery and in developing an autonomous project for Cuba.
