This is the only scientific and academic institution in Cuba dedicated entirely to the thought and work of José Martí. It sponsors research, conferences and workshops, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate courses and colloquiums, both national and international, in addition to rescuing and preserving the documentary heritage of José Martí, as well as promoting publications about his legacy. Established on May 19, 1977 by order of the Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers, the Center is one of the first institutions founded by the Ministry of Culture due to the need to study the life and transcendence of the most universal of Cubans. On February 3, 1982, its headquarters moved from the National Library to the colonial mansion that occupies today.
